CAPTAIN'S PRIZE

Format: The prerogative of the reigning Captain, though must be a singles competition as it qualifies for John Shaw points. Usually 18 holes, stableford off handicap. Also a scratch prize (medal) and a veteran’s prize (stableford off handicap).
Number of holes: 18
Tees: Captain’s prize and scratch prize – white tees. Veteran’s prize – yellow tees.
Eligibility: Open to 7-day adult members. Lifestyle members may play on payment of the appropriate credits. Veterans must be 65 or over on the day of the competition.

CORONATION CUP

coronation-cup.jpg

Format: Medal off handicap.
Number of holes: 36
Tees: White
Eligibility: 7-day adult members. Lifestyle members may play on payment of the appropriate credits. Juniors may also play, but must be accompanied by an adult.

History: This was presented in honour of King George VI who was crowned in 1937 following the abdication of Edward VIII. The first reference on the honours board is to 1946 when the cup was won by M. J. Chinn, a rather extrovert member! It was presented by L. D. Sinclair. It is possible that the imminence of war delayed an honours board. At one time it was played jointly with the Scratch Championship until the two were wisely separated.

KRUGER SOVEREIGN

kruger-sovereign.jpg

Format: Stableford off handicap.
Number of holes: 18
Tees: Yellow
Eligibility: 7, 6 and 5-day adult members but excludes junior members. Lifestyle members may play on payment of the appropriate credits.
Ties: As usual.
Prizes: The winner will hold the trophy for one year. The winner will receive a glass.
Additional comments: Held on Thursdays twice a year, in spring and autumn.
History: Alan Kruger was an estate agent before he retired to play golf and bridge, mainly in mid-week. He maintained the lake at the 13th hole with fish. Each year he had a small group of friends for a day’s golf at Ashford Manor. Each winner was presented with a gold Kruger Rand until his stock was exhausted. Such was his affection for the club that he asked for his ashes to be scattered on the 18th fairway opposite the lake. The Kruger Sovereign was the centre piece of a silver salver presented in 1973 by his friends. Unfortunately the Kruger Sovereign centre piece was lost when the salver was being inscribed. To replace it would have cost about £200 so an English sovereign was used instead.
