The Gents invitation to the Ladies went well on Sunday, after Ray's arm twisting we had one of the best turnouts in recent years with 22 pairs entering. Neal Avent and Sharon Saunders won with a huge score of 45 points beating Janet Connor and Mark Stevens into second place with 43 points.
Tuesday saw the Ladies V the Bush Nationals annual match. Since we usually win by quite a margin and it has become less of a competition it was decided to change the format to a 15 hole alliance competition with teams made up of 2 ladies and 2 Bush Nationals. This format worked well and the day was a success with good golf, good food and good company. It was of course even better, for me, since I was in the winning team: Carol Agass, Bryon Boyes and Tony Thorley were my teammates and we scored 71 points to win our slimming bag of Maltesers.
Today was a lovely temperature for golf and far better than last week's soggy conditions! I managed to see all the teams at least once during the day and am glad to say that a good time seemed to be had by all. It was nice to see so many ladies in the bar after. Our winners for the day were: Nearest the pin on 13 was Una Killgallon, on the 4th in 2 was Roz Margey, Front 9 was Louise Fickling and Sue charles with 22points on countback, Back 9 was Sarah Rees and Hazel Goodyear with 23 points, 4th with 41 points on countback was Wendy Goodman and Pam Brookman, 3rd with 42 points was Lesley Stevens and Penny Bushe, 2nd with 43 points was Sue Collins and Sharon Saunders and the winners on countback also with 43 points were Cela Selley and Pauline Platt. Well done to all.
The New Members' Trophy, which was rained off on the only wet day in recent times, has been rescheduled for Sunday August 26th. If you are a new member who has joined within 3 years on the day of the competition you are eligible to enter and we would like as many to enter as possible to make this an occasion for new members to get together and we will also have members of the committees around to meet you. The Captain and I will be there to see you off the first and buy you a drink after. This is a mixed individual stableford competition off full handicap.
We also have the Grace Lawrence (Business ladies) Trophy on Sunday, which is for ladies in regular paid employment. If you are eligible for both this and the new members trophy you can play in both at the same time, since they are both stableford competitions. If you are entering both be sure to let the pro shop know before going out and write both competitions on the top of your card.
Next week we have the President's prize for the Ladies. Nigel has asked that this is run as a shotgun start to once again have us all coming in at roughly the same time. If you sign-up as normal via the BRS but don't worry about the timings since I will send out the timesheet with times and starting holes towards the end of the week.
Don't forget to put your name down for the President's night on Saturday September 1st! This promises to be a good evening, a three course meal in the restaurant followed by music and dancing in the main bar downstairs.
Mark and Janet are organising a mixed friendly V Enfield at Enfield on Sunday Sept 2nd. There seem to be a lot of men who now wish to play in the mixed, see Ray's list! So get out there and ask them to play or get Janet & Mark to do the asking if you feel a little shy, these are always good days!
Guy Saunders, Billie Newland, Ray Ripsher and Stewart are setting up a committee to raise funds and build a ladies toilet on the course in time for our 125year celebrations in 2020. They feel that this would be helped by another lady member joining this committee, so if you would like to join them please contact Billie or Stewart?
On a sad note the funeral of Forbes Chapman, former Captain and President, will be at New Southgate Crematorium on Tuesday August 28th at 2pm.
I am disappointed at the uptake for the Lady Captain/Pro challenge and would be very happy if more of you would sign up, although dates are quickly becoming scarce since my time as captain is quickly coming to a close. The sheet is now in the pro shop and any mutually agreeable date is possible, not just Sunday's!
Do remember that Pauline is collecting 1&2 litre milk bottle tops in aid of the London Air Ambulance. If you can please collect these, give them a quick rinse and bring them to the club we will provide a collection container in the locker room.
