It's been a very eventful and enjoyable week at BHPGC, not least with the opening of the clubhouse on Saturday 4th July. Although we had to abide by COVID 19 rules, the event was well supported and lasted well into the evening. Our staff managed to accommodate all the members that attended and SoHo Gourmet Catering kept us well fed with burgers, baps and buns. Luckily the weather was kind to us although a bit breezy.
On the golf front Saturdays competition, The Bushguarders National Trophy, was won in fine style by Kevin Lewis, an 11 handicapper, with 43 points, beating Nigel Hunnisett and Kevin Prime both with 40 points.
The course itself is standing up well to the large amount of traffic it's experiencing, thanks to the efforts of Graham Careford and his team. We could still do with a couple of nights rain to freshen it up.
On Sunday we held our 1st Fourball Draw since January, owing to the inclement weather and Covid. We had a really strong field of 52 players with quite a few new members. We played in pairs off full handicap. The winners were Ray Ripsher, last year's Captain, & Clive J Prior with a magnificent 46 points, closely followed by John Guiney & Andy Garrad with 45 points. The weather was kind to us and we used the patio to it's full extent.
On Monday 6th July the club experienced a golfing marathon. Starting at 4.30 am, Danny Hill, our profesional, started the first round of seven as he attempted to play 125 holes of golf in a day. Initially he was accompanied by Vice Captain Iain Lanario for the first two rounds. I turned up in a buggy for the next two. As the day went on more and more members turned up to support him and to clear the way in front so he wouldn't get held up. By the end of the seventh round, Danny had an entourage of over 20 people encouraging him, some walking, some in buggies, some just standing by applauding. When he eventually reached the clubhouse there was another crowd of members to welcome him. At the end of this test of endurance Danny had achieved 24 birdies and only lost 4 balls but most spectacularly he had raised over £4,500 pounds for my Charity - The British Heart Foundation! You can still donate here. Thanks Danny, it's really appreciated.
Danny looks OK after 125 holes of golf. He didn't use the buggy!
Back to the clubhouse, SoHo Gourmet 'pop-up' restaurant will be serving food on Friday evening until 8.30 and the bar will be open to 9.00 pm. Please book a table and come along.
