My first official engagement was the Captain's Driver competition. This was a pairs better ball bogey competition which attracted 40 stalwart golfers. Unfortunately the weather forecast was not great putting off a small number of participants afraid of getting their hair wet. This caused a problem for Danny Hill who had to rejig the players so that we had the correct numbers. In fact Danny had to act as a marker so that an odd pair could play. Well done and thanks Danny. The winners were Mike Stainton and John Copley on plus 8.
After about 4 hours of trying golf, bogey is a difficult format, it was my duty to 'Drive In' down the 18th fairway. Somehow a rumour had got around the club that I always hit my drives 180 yds right. This was reflected in the Charity Drive guess sheet running out of space in that area. At about 1.30 pm, wearing my red charity polo shirt, I took up my stance ready to drive off once the barracking and general mayhem had subsided. I addressed the golf ball donated by Danny, which looked like it had been found in the slurry dump adjacent to the 18th fairway. I don't think he wanted to lose a brand new Pro v1. Anyway I'd had a couple of drinks so I was quite relaxed when I gave it an almighty clump obviously out driving Ray's effort of last year. When Danny found the ball he used his range finder to record the distance. This turned out to be 206 yards, I think it plugged when it landed but it was dead centre of the fairway. This yardage was accurately predicted by Ian McNally who will receive the £100 cash prize.
My Vice Captain Iain Lanario had been making himself busy going around the club encouraging members to sign the Charity Sheet and he far exceeded my efforts last year. Thanks Iain.
My Charity this year is the British Heart Foundation and I will make every effort to meet my target.
This year I will be meeting & greeting new golf members and playing a few holes with them so they know a little bit about the club.
Also the Christmas party posters will be going up soon, so please book your tables early to avoid disappointment.
I think that's enough for my first blog except to say that the Autumnal Vases Pro Draw is taking place on Sunday 6th October. I should have the Captain & Pro Challenge Sheet up in the George Low bar by then.
