As we push into September we start to see the last big events of the golfing season. This Saturday is President's Day and I know that Nigel has put a lot of effort into the day, so I hope it will be a memorable one for him and for everyone. The promise of top quality fillet steaks has lured nearly 80 people to the evening, which promises to be a lively affair, and good weather has been organised for the day.

And Sunday morning is my last four-ball draw. I have enjoyed these days immensely, especially playing with Danny, so it would be great to see as many of you as possible at 8.00 a.m., headaches notwithstanding.

August Medal

A magnificent nett 65 by Chris Davison on Saturday won him the August Medal in division 1. Your Captain (I did give you fair warning of my impending improvement) was runner up with 68. In division 2 Dave Griffiths and Ray Hurding both scored nett 68 but Dave came in first with the better back nine.

New Members Trophy

Sunday saw the re-scheduled trophy for our new members and what a horrible day it was. Only five players braved the elements and they have my full admiration, though tinged with concerns for their sanity! Sharon Saunders had a brilliant score of 39 points to beat Rob Clegg by just the one point.

Bank Holiday Monday Golf

After the horrid weather of Sunday, Bank Holiday Monday was a lovely day and 48 people played in the Texas Scramble. The winning team, scoring an incredible 16 under par (nett 54), was Neal Avent, Tim Corrick, Daniel Barker and Chris Davison. Runners up, with another great score of 56 were Mark Kermode, Ken Cave, Michael Harsant and their guest, Greg Mackett. Thanks to Danny and Jon Copley for organising the event.

After an excellent barbecue some of us took to the putting green to compete in the Wilson Putting Vase. The final, watched by a spirited crowd, turned out to be a nail biting match between Lisa Martin and Jon Copley. After 9 holes Lisa was 3 up and looked to be running away with it, but at the half way point her lead had been reduced to just one up. With 9 holes to play Jon had grabbed the lead by one hole, which he managed to hold on to until the 36th hole. So Jon Copley won the match and the cup, which was presented to him by last year's winner Penny Bushe.

Captain/Pro Match

Danny and I (well more Danny than I) won a Captain/Pro match against the formidable pairing of the President and last year's Captain, Nigel Hunnisett and Dave Morris, on Thursday. It was a really enjoyable morning and there was some good golf played all round, but we prevailed on the 17th hole, where giving your Captain a stroke was just too much.
