The season is progressing fast now and competitions have already reached the semi-final stage. It is still our intention to have a special finals' weekend. This will give more prominence to the competitions and let finalists feel proud about their achievement. It will also give members the opportunity to follow the progress of the matches, both on and off the course, if they so wish. So, if you are still in the summer competitions, make sure you keep the first weekend of October clear in your diary.
George Low '32'
The George Low '32' competition, held last Saturday, was established in 1995 in memory of George Low who was our professional for 32 years and well respected personality in the realm of golf. George was a great teacher and a nicer man you couldn't hope to meet. Kevin Lewis was the winner with an excellent score of nett 66. Mind you I taught him maths so there's no guarantee he added his score up correctly! Norman Selley was second with a 67 and there were two players on 68, Graham Edwards and, would you believe, your Captain. Congratulations Kevin.
Gentlemen's Invitation to the Ladies
Always an enjoyable day and this year was no exception. An excellent turnout of 22 pairs ensured a great afternoon, all thanks to the organisation and formidable coaxing skills of Ray Ripsher. Sharon Saunders and Neal Avent won with an amazing score of 45 points and Janet Connor and Mark Stevens were runners up with 43. Alison Towndrow and Steve Lawson won best front 9 with 22 points and Lesley Avent and Guy Saunders won the best back 9 with 25 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Alison Towndrow and Jim Craggs.
Those that have served on committee, or indeed are serving now, qualify to play in the committee cup, which was held last Monday. Thirteen players took part and it was Jon Copley who came through on top with 41 points. Second was Martyn Lainchbury with 38 points and Mark Watts came third with 37 points. The cup itself is an understated affair and was presented by a previous secretary back in 1983.
Captains Away Day
For those of you who have put your name down for this eagerly awaited event I will need to be collecting some money soon. I will send out an email very soon outlining the day but in the meantime if you would like to pay £70 either at the office or to Danny I would be grateful. Cheques can be made out to the club.
Ladies v Bush Nationals
The Bush Nationals are those members of the club who served a period of National Service and on Tuesday they joined forces with the ladies to enjoy an alliance competition. This is a team game in which the best two scores on each hole count. The winners were the team including the Lady Captain, Carol Agass, Bryon Boyce and Tony Thorley who scored 71 points over 15 holes. Following the game they had a meal at which there were stories of bravery and daring do, and that was just the ladies!
Danny and I played one of our rare Captain and Pro matches last week. We played against Amanda and Stephen Lawson, two of our newer members, and we all enjoyed a very pleasant morning. Danny and I just managed to come in first but we won't mention that.
