This week saw the South of England Girls Championship and if you were unable to come along you missed some magnificent golf from the girls, one of whom was as young as 10. One of them even got a hole in one on the 7th, particularly impressive because they played off the white tees. Five counties took part, Middlesex, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, and it was Surrey that came out on top after three days of play. The event was organised by Di Williams and I congratulate her on putting together a brilliant competition. It was a privilege for Bush Hill to host the event and I received many great compliments from players and parents about the course and our hospitality.
The second of our 36 hole competitions was held on Saturday and fifteen players took part. John Stolliday was the clear leader at lunchtime with a nett 67, four shots ahead of Dave Morris. John, never known for his stamina, could not maintain his form and was overtaken by Kieran Costello, who finished strongly with a 66 in the afternoon, his final score of 140 just enough to take the competition on the back 18 holes from Mike Stainton. The three Johns, Guiney, Copley and Stolliday, all finished two shots back on 142. Well done Kieran.
Now here's a result to lift the spirits. The foxes competing in the Aubrey Cup at West Middlesex on Tuesday were victorious in their semi-final match against Finchley. It was nail biting stuff apparently with the score at 4 all after eight matches and just one game to come in. This featured Dave Morris, who was one up coming to the last. Dave admits to some nerves on the last hole but safely negotiated a half so giving Bush Hill a place in the final at Sudbury on the 6th October. Our opponents are not known as yet but I will keep you updated. This is a great result given that it is the first year we have competed in this county wide knock-out event.
Staysure Tour Event at Hanbury Manor
The Staysure Tour is what used to be called the European Seniors Tour. Paul Robertson has informed me that he will be playing in the Pro-Am on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd August (lucky blighter) and was wondering whether you would like to go along and watch him play. If the thought does not immediately fill you with enthusiasm then I should point out that there will be many of the top seniors competing also. The event is taking place at Hanbury Manor and will be followed on 24th, 25th and 26th August by the Willow Senior Golf Classic. Entry is free for spectators (you will only have to pay £5.00 for parking all day) and it's a great chance to see some former Ryder Cup players as well as some of the top European seniors' players. The event is in aid of the Willow Foundation which many of you will know was founded by Bob Wilson, the former Arsenal Goal keeper and TV presenter. It aims to help seriously ill young adults living with life threatening conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease or cystic fibrosis.
Captains Away Day
I need to get this settled as soon as possible. If you want to come but haven't got your name down please do so in the next few days. The list is in the George Low bar. We're going to Aldwickbury Park Golf Club near Harpenden on the 9th September. We'll have a bacon roll on arrival, a round of golf beginning at about 11.00 a.m. and a three course meal afterwards. Prizes will include a nearest the pin and of course there's the coveted Away Day trophy to play for also. I'd love it if we could get a few more players. The reason I decided to make it one day instead of an overnighter was to attract more players. This now seems to have been flawed thinking. The day will be very relaxed and there'll be no need to dress up for the meal (I know this was worrying some of you).
The funeral for Forbes Chapman will take place on Tuesday 28th August - 2pm at Southgate Crematorium
Gents Invite to the Ladies – This Sunday. Don't even try to get in now!
New Members Trophy – We have rescheduled this for the 26th August. Book a time through the BRS between 10.30 and 11.30 a.m. or let them know in the pro shop that you would like to play. Entry will be £1.00 and there will be an optional sweep.
August Bank Holiday – 27th August. A Texas Scramble in the morning followed by the Wilson Putting Vase in the afternoon. Please sign up in the George Low Bar. If you haven't got a team don't worry, you can sign up as an individual and we will find a team for you.
President's Day – Notices are up for President's Day on the 1st September. Book for golf in the usual way and see Debbie for the evening.
Cross Country – The cross country has been rescheduled for the 6th September. Sign up on the PSI screen, the App or in the Pro Shop. Entry will be £1.00.
Finally, a very warm welcome to our newest member, James Jones, who joins us as a full member. I hope he'll soon feel right at home.
Speak next week.
