Captain's Announcements

Before I start I need to grovel in forgiveness for not mentioning Len Palmer's magnificent hole in one on the 15th during the American Cup last week. This is especially poor of me as Len provided us all with wine at the table in the evening. Can you ever forgive me Len?

Captain's Day

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my Captain's Day on Saturday; well actually I can, it was fantastic! The sun shone throughout and over 90 players competed to win the coveted Captain's prize.

Two people scored 39 points, Oz Hassan and Chris Hollins, but Oz took the prize with a better back nine. Tony Thorley, playing out of his boots, scored 38 points to win the vets' prize and Clive Prior won the scratch with a gross score of 74.

Nearest the pins went to Kieran Costello, Nick Balnave and Iain Lanario and the mystery prize, whatever that was, went to one of our new lifestyle members, Chris Davison.

The Lady Captain and the Lady Captain's mother helped out considerably during the day, keeping everyone fed and watered at the hut, making a poor impression of David Bailey and I can't thank them enough.

The green staff, as ever, pulled out all the stops to ensure everyone played on a course that was in tip top condition. The fairways might be burnt up in this hot weather, but the greens, tees and approaches were excellent. Thanks chaps.

In the evening we enjoyed Middle Eastern cuisine, care of Alasdair, followed by a casino in the main bar. The prize for the most 'money' won on the night went to Dave Morris, who won £122, and in typically ungallant fashion beat his wife, Tracey, into second place. Dave won a magnum of Rioja, kindly donated by Debbie Sanders, and I sincerely hope he is going to give Tracey a glass or two!

Thanks to everyone who played during the day or attended in the evening. I really do hope you all had a lovely day, because I certainly did.

Four-ball Draw

I have to admit that I was not in any state to play golf on Sunday following Captain's night the evening before. Keeping my head down was easier than it has ever been but the noise the birds were making was unbearable!

For once we had a mathematically useful number and even I could work out that 21 people can be divided into seven teams of three. Two cards were to count on each hole and, with what I regard to be an obscene score of 89 points, the day was won by Clive Prior, Dave Krouse and Graham Evans. Runners up were Jon Copley, Rob Wiles and Martyn Lainchbury scoring 87 points.

Costa Brava

Fancy a trip to the Costa Brava? Well the winner of this weekend's stableford will do just that. They'll play in a grand final and get to play other courses in the region. How about that for a prize? I'm off to practise.

Carnoustie

Fancy a visit to the Open Championship? John White has two tickets for the Saturday which he is unable to make use of and is asking whether anyone would like them. The first person to contact Danny can have them. I deliberately put this near the bottom of my report as a reward for reading it! Thanks John.

Coming Up

Ladies Invitation to the Gentlemen – This Sunday. You need to find a woman quickly if you want to play.

Captain's Guest Day – 22nd July. Open to all full and six day members. I hope by the time you read this there will be a notice up in the George Low. Surely you can find a friend!

Club Championship – This is to be played over two weekends, the 21st and the 28th July. There will be a scratch and a new handicap championship, both of which will be held over two successive weekends.

My final message this week is about entering scores on the PSI. You ALWAYS enter your gross score. A few players entered their points last weekend, the computer thought it was their gross score and converted it into a massive points score!

Speak next week.
